Shipping a modern framework inside a WordPress-shaped host

A field-service booking platform needed current-generation tooling — on a shared hosting account built, in every practical sense, around WordPress.

Context

A home-services business needed a booking platform: customers, technicians, jobs, and invoices, built to be maintained and extended for years, not a one-off script. The chosen framework was Laravel, deployed on the same shared hosting account that ran the rest of the client's WordPress sites.

The challenge

The hosting account's default command-line PHP was a version behind what the framework required, so routine commands failed until the deployment pipeline pointed explicitly at the correct PHP binary — the kind of environment mismatch that silently breaks CI on hosts never designed for a framework like this.

What we did

The concrete engineering decisions that made this work.

Pinned the right PHP binary

Every artisan and Composer command in the deploy process is pinned to the PHP 8.4 binary the framework actually requires, instead of the account's older CLI default.

Clean domain model from day one

Customers, technicians, bookings, and invoices as first-class entities with real relationships — not bolted onto a page-builder's post types.

Isolated credentials

A dedicated database and database user for the platform, kept separate from the WordPress sites sharing the account.

Deploy discipline that survives config caching

Documented the exact sequence — edit environment config, then clear and rebuild the framework's config cache — so a credential change can never silently leave the app running on stale settings.

Outcome

A production-ready booking platform — seeded, tested, and deployed on infrastructure that was never designed for it — ready to onboard its first customers and technicians.
